Following the recent passing of the bill giving legal backing to the existence of the Nigerian Peace Corps by the National Assembly, an environment has now been created for the mopping up of a sizeable percentage of unemployed youths from the ever increasing labour market.
This was the view expressed by the Commander of the Bayelsa Command of the Corps Nelson Agbasimokumor Efeke while chatting with newsmen as members of the Corps celebrated the passing of the Peace Corps Bill at the State Command office Kpansia, Yenagoa.
According to the Commander, with the passage of that Bill, the outfit which was established eighteen years ago as a non-governmental organization has now transformed into a para-military body with legal powers to work and support existing security organizations in making our society safe and secure for every law abiding citizen.
He added that aside other roles that circumstances may determine, the outfit, shall operate basically in educational institutions and in major public events.
Its functions, he remarked, are to control the crowd at such occasions, instill discipline, order and a sense of patriotism in the hearts of Nigerian youths in educational institutions and with time set up a monitoring team that would ensure that students do not roam the streets during school hours.
Considering the scope of its operations., the Peace Corps, Commander Efeke stressed would need to have as much as eight hundred thousand personnel in its fold nationwide and Bayelsans, he urged, shou,ld take advantage of of the slot available to the state, fill its spaces so as to reduce the number of unemployed youths roaming the streets in search of jobs.
Giving kudos to President Mohammadu Buhari, the national Assembly led by Senate President Bukola Saraki for ensuring the eventual passage of the Bill, Cmmander Efeke assured that the outfit led by Dr. Ambassador Dickson Akoh shall, while carrying out its duties not disappoint Nigerians who kept faith and continually supported it till this moment of its official recognition by the Nigerian State.
