In spite of the fact that Presidential Amnesty Programme office located at Kaiama community, Bayelsa state, has been vandalized by criminals, the Elders Council of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) central zone has backed the appointments of Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Prof. Nelson Braibayefa and Special Adviser to President Buhari and Coordinator Presidential Amnesty Programme, Prof. Charles Quaker Dokubo.
The elders council is of the opinion that these two sons of the Niger Delta region are men of integrity that they have seen the signs of transformation since they were appointed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Addressing journalists in Yenagoa, the Chairman of the council, Comrade Mike Wenibowei also said that they condemned the looting of the presidential amnesty programme warehouse where essential properties meant for trainees were carted away by criminals which he described as petty, disgraceful and shameful.
He therefore pleaded with SA and Coordinator of the presidential amnesty programme, Prof. Dokubo to forgive the perpetrators of this crime and asked him to extended his hand of fellowship to the Ijaw family, leaders of Kaiama community over the criminality.
He also apologized on behalf of the Elders council and clan leaders of the central zone of IYC to Prof. Dokubo.
However, Comrade Wenibowei has called on all well-meaning Ijaw sons and daughters including the Federal Government to discountenance the calls making the round for the removal of these two sons of Ijaw land from office, describing them as myopic political jobbers whose stock in trade is to cause confusion in Ijaw nation while they benefit from their mischievous activities.
Asked whether the IYC central zone can fish out the perpetrators of this criminality at Kaiama community, one of the Elders Council Chief Kalaiti Jephter Obidiah responded that it is not the responsibility of Ijaw Youth Council to do that, but it is duty of the Federal Government to arrest and charge suspected criminals to court, adding that Elders don’t want to cause further crisis in the Ijaw nation.
However, he would want the perpetrators of the crime to be law abiding.
In another development, the Elders Council of IYC Central Zone has confirmed the new leadership of council. He is Thomas Toinkere as chairman.
This decision was taken at a congress meeting held at Egbedi community by the elders council saying that it cannot be discarded by political leaders no matter highly placed they are.
